Using Gwen Marston’s Liberated Quiltmaking techniques as inspiration, construct houses in different styles and sizes, and, if you choose, select a theme or holiday to celebrate in the neighborhood. All construction is accomplished using improvisational techniques - no patterns or appliqué. Everything is original design!
Join member Kate Yates on June 1st for a bag making class. This year, we'll be using Anna Graham's Fika Tote pattern. Participants will will receive a PDF copy of the pattern before class, so they can cut and prepare their fabric and interfacing. In the class, we will learn how to assemble the bag. This pattern allows for fun customization options with hand stitching or focus fabric on the outside pockets. We'll learn how to insert zippers, attach and customize pockets, and create straps. Due to it's size, it's a great bag to carry along to sew days and guild meetings. You can customize the sizes of the inner pockets to accommodate a laptop, tablets, books, phones, or other items, which make this a very versatile tote.
This is an all day class, and many students will be able to finish their bags in class. If you don't finish in class, don't worry! You'll be far enough along that you'll be able to assemble the rest of it at home.
Event Details:
Saturday, June 1, 2019, from 9:30 - 3:30
Location: Patch Reef Park in Boca Raton
Tickets: Members only, $20
Pattern Information from Noodle-head.com:
Fika is a Swedish word, meaning ‘to have coffee’. The classic clean lines of this mid-sized tote give a nod to my Scandinavian heritage. The Fika Tote has plenty of features you’ll love, like front pockets, a back lapped zipper pocket, recessed zipper closure and padded pockets. Take this tote on your next visit with friends!
Bag features:
2 front pockets for things you need to keep close at hand
back lapped zippered pocket
optional recessed zipper (it’s optional, but I know you’ll love it!)
makes a great work or student bag, padded interior pockets can accommodate most laptop sizes
Skill Level: Intermediate (this is a fairly straightforward sew, but due to the number of pieces and size of the tote I classify this pattern as Intermediate) an adventurous Advanced Beginner could also tackle this project – just takes a bit of organization
Approx. Finished Dimensions: 17” wide, 15” tall, 5” deep
Materials that you’ll bring to the workshop:
SFMQG will provide you the PDF pattern and the 2 zippers required (one for the exterior pocket and one for the recessed closure). You will need to bring these additional materials:
Requirements based on 44”-wide fabric.
1 yard Exterior Fabric
1/2 yard Accent Fabric
2 yards Lining Fabric (includes interior pockets)
3 yards Fusible Woven Interfacing (Pellon SF101 – 20”-wide)
3/4 yard Foam Stabilizer (byAnnie’s Soft & Stable (58”-wide) or 2 yards Pellon Foam Flex (20”-wide) or 1 yard Pellon 987f fusible fleece (44”-wide)
Recommended Fabrics: Lightweight canvas (7-9 oz. weight) or medium weight quilting cotton for exterior fabric. Quilting cotton for Lining and Accent fabric.
Additional supplies + tools: Polyester thread, water-soluble pen/tailor’s chalk, cutting mat, ruler, rotary cutter, glue pen (Sewline glue pen is Kate’s favorite), size 14 or 16 denim or Microtex needle, turning tool, pinking shears.
