January Special Topic – Modern Quilt Layout

Our own Wanda’s QAL

Chicago Modern Quilt Guild’s 2013 QuiltCon charity quilt – designed by Iris Johnson

At the SFMQG meeting on Saturday Jan 16th 2016 the special topic will be Modern Quilt Layout.

Compared to traditional quilts there isn't a lot written specifically about modern quilt layout except the quilt patterns/tutorials that are available.

So you make Quilt Along (QAL) blocks or you win a Block of the Month (BOM) lottery what can you do with those blocks that will look modern and a bit different than the simple grid layout.

Some of these techniques we have already covered in Special Topics but are worth repeating; negative space, alternate grid, improv.

We’ll show you some modern quilt layouts for inspiration.

Also an easy low tech and no design wall method to arrange your blocks.

We will be asking for volunteers to interactively create modern layouts - don’t be shy.

Everyone would love to see your quilts with unusual modern layouts - please bring them to show & tell. Even if we have seen them before we’d like to view them again as they relate to the topic.

See you Saturday!
