March Meeting Recap

The March meeting was a success! Thanks to everyone who attended and a big shout out to all of our guests. We hope you enjoyed yourself and would love to see you again soon.

National Quilting Day

Our March 2017 meeting fell on National Quilting Day and we celebrated by playing a fun trivia game. The questions ranged from easy to hard and fun was had by all! Thanks for your participation and thanks to Beth & Charlotte for donating the prizes for the winning team.

Make Do Challenge

Patti spoke with us about the Make Do Challenge. She shared some really interesting stories about the history of "making do" in sewing. For instance, did you know that Gypsy Rose Lee admitted to stealing linens and blankets from hotels in order to reuse them to make clothing? Patti also presented a few examples of projects and materials we could use. Thanks for the inspiration, Patti!

Don't forget, the deadline for this challenge is the June meeting. You can read all about the challenge on the most recent blog post.

Riley Blake Challenge

Shelly spoke with us about the 2017 Spring MQG Riley Blake challenge, using the Rockstar fabric. This is due April 30th and we will have a special show & tell at our May meeting. You can read more details on the MQG website here.

Sew Much Quilty Fun

As many of you know, the month between our February and March meeting was jam packed with quilty fun. For our special topic at the March meeting, two of our members gave presentations on some of this fun.

Debbie K. brought the QuiltCon experience to South Florida. She gave a great presentation, recapping pictures of quilts and outlining all of the different classes our SFMQG members were able to take in Savannah. You can view her presentation at the bottom of this blog post.

Charlotte then did a great job summarizing BQE. So many of our own members had quilts on display. Congrats to everyone who was in the show. Our charity quilt was raffled off at BQE and Patti's daughter Marissa won. She came to the meeting on Saturday and we presented the quilt to her. What a special moment! For a more detailed recap, you can also view Charlotte's presentation at the bottom of this blog post.

Thanks so much, Debbie and Charlotte. We appreciate the hard work that went into these special presentations. It was a great wrap up from a fun and busy month.

QAL: Half Square Triangle

We had a great turnout from last months QAL block, strips and squares. Congrats to Jennifer H who won the prize this month, an awesome Tula Pink coloring book.

Debbie K. presented on the next piece in our Modern Medallion quilt along: half square triangles. You can read direction and tips on the blog post here. Please bring in a section of your HST border next month for another change to win.

BOM

It was so fun to see all the modern maple leafs made for March. Allison had a great suggestion on placement of the blocks, to create a secondary pattern. Congrats to new member Sharon H. who won the collection of modern maples.

Allison and Ivy presented the next block of the month: the scrappy improve nine-patch. You can read the directions on the blog post here. This is a colorful block and I personally cannot wait to see the turnout next month!

Events

Andrea, our VP of Events, gave us an update on our upcoming bag making workshop. You can read the details here and sign up and pay for the workshop here
