February QAL

I have had a crazy busy fun month, with a trip to QuiltCon in Savannah as the highlight. So inspired to sew and work on new things. How about you?

Have you started your QAL? As a reminder, month one is focused on squares and rectangles. Choose a block size that is divisible for 2, 3 or 5 for your block size, for ease of assembly later. Make 20” of a border or a dozen blocks to get an idea of how your border will look. You can add more blocks later as things start to take shape.

How much fabric to get?

If you have a definite finished size in mind, estimate your yardage using that size as a guide. For instance, if you want to make a full sized quilt that it 82 x 88, you know before cutting and adding seam allowances you would need 5 yards of fabric. If you are only using 5 fabrics, then you would need a little more than a yard of each fabric. Scraps take this stress out of calculating yardage because it is easy to add additional fabrics if you run out.

Here a couple tutorials to watch if you want to strengthen your basic skills.

Here are some examples of border possibilities. Remember you can use improvisational piecing if you prefer. Be brave!

Please bring your border  segment in to the next meeting. There will be a prize for one lucky participant.

Are you wondering about next month’s assignment? We are moving on to half square triangles. There was a class at QuiltCon completely devoted to the many different ways to make a half-square triangle. Here are some tutorials to a few of the many methods.
